DRACUT – The NEMLEC Police Foundation, Inc., is pleased to announce that its annual golf tournament fundraiser raised $28,000 to support police training, programs and services to its member departments.
The 2021 NEMLEC Police Foundation Golf Tournament was held on Monday, May 17, at Four Oaks Country Club in Dracut, supported by a sellout of 147 golfers. The high level of support from golfers, sponsors, a successful raffle and silent auction was especially important given the cancellation of the 2020 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the dinner following the tournament the Foundation honored Dracut Deputy Police Chief Stephen Chaput. Chaput served on the NEMLEC SWAT team for 32 years. including seven years as leader. Deputy Chief Chaput’s contributions have been an integral part of NEMLEC’s success.
Chaput thanked his fellow SWAT team members, NEMLEC member chiefs, his law enforcement mentors, but most importantly his family.
The dinner also recognized Pepperell Police Chief David Scott, who is currently battling colon cancer. Golfers donated $1,370 toward Scott’s treatment in a 50/50 raffle at the 15th hole. Deputy Chief Chaput, in his remarks, turned to Chief Scott and said, “You got this.”
All proceeds from the tournament go directly to the NEMLEC Foundation, which provides training and support for municipal police in Middlesex and Essex counties.
“The COVID-19 pandemic seriously limited our ability to raise money and provide necessary resources to NEMLEC member departments,” said Foundation Chairman Richard Raymond. “Our golfers and sponsors responded this year to make the 2021 tournament the best yet.”
“We were thrilled to honor Deputy Chief Chaput, who gave so selflessly to the SWAT Team for so many years,” said Foundation Director Sharon Crowley. “We also are thankful to share Chief Scott’s fight with our members, who responded so generously and let him know his law-enforcement family has his back.”
With funds raised at previous tournaments, the Foundation has been able to continuously offer and add new training opportunities for hundreds of police officers in Middlesex and Essex counties, as well as elite NEMLEC units, including:
- School Threat Assessment Response System (STARS) training
- Basic and advanced criminal investigation training for detectives
- Supervisor training through Roger Williams University
- Comprehensive motorcycle training for the NEMLEC Motor Unit
- Advanced tactical training (SWAT/RRT)
- K-9 Training
- School and workplace violence training
- Risk management training
- Active shooter training
The NEMLEC Foundation also raises thousands of dollars each year for charities that are near and dear to police officers, including Cops for Kids with Cancer.
This year’s recipient of a Foundation donation will be announced at a later date.
